Day-by-Day Itinerary: 14 Day Egypt Tour

This 14 day Egypt tour takes you to the country’s most famous sites: from the Giza Pyramids, the last surviving wonder of the ancient world, to the temples of the pharaohs in Luxor. Next, you travel through the Nile landscape between Edfu and Aswan, and finally you see the impressive rock temples of Abu Simbel. A certified English-speaking Egyptologist guide accompanies you throughout the 14 days. Hotel transfers, all domestic flights, entrance tickets and the meals listed in the programme are also included. Browse more Egypt tour packages or our Nile cruises.

Day 1 – Arrival in Cairo

Your guide welcomes you personally at Cairo International Airport with a sign bearing your name. You are then driven to your hotel in a private air-conditioned vehicle, with welcome drinks (water and cola) on board. After check-in, the guide talks you through the whole route of the 14 day tour, confirms pick-up times and answers all your questions. Enjoy a first quiet evening in Cairo, because the real adventure begins the next day.

Day 2 – The Giza Pyramids, the Sphinx and Saqqara

The Giza Pyramids: After breakfast, your private Egyptologist picks you up. The three huge pyramids of Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure at the gates of Cairo are not just an architectural masterpiece. Above all, they are the only surviving one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World (c. 2600–2500 BC). For example, the Pyramid of Khufu alone has a volume of 2.3 million cubic metres and an original height of 146 metres.

The Sphinx and the Valley Temple: The legendary guardian with the body of a lion and the head of Pharaoh Khafre is one of the most famous symbols in human history. Directly opposite stands the Valley Temple, one of the oldest surviving stone buildings in the world.

Lunch at a local restaurant is included.

Saqqara – the Step Pyramid of Djoser: Built around 2700 BC, it is the oldest surviving stone pyramid in the world. The funerary complex covers almost 16 hectares and is surrounded by a limestone wall more than 10 metres high. Finally, hieroglyphs and carvings give a unique insight into the religious practices and daily life of the ancient Egyptians.

Day 3 – Alexandria: the Catacombs, the Citadel of Qaitbay and Pompey’s Pillar

In the morning, your guide picks you up for the drive to Alexandria, which takes about 3 hours.

The Catacombs of Kom el-Shoqafa: hidden beneath bustling Alexandria, this 2nd-century AD necropolis is a fascinating archaeological wonder. It shows a blend of Egyptian, Greek and Roman influences from the time when Alexandria was the heart of the ancient world.

The Citadel of Qaitbay: this fortress was built in AD 1477 on the exact site of the famous Lighthouse of Pharos, one of the Seven Wonders of the World, which was destroyed by an earthquake in the 14th century. From the roof of the citadel, there is also a breathtaking view of the Mediterranean.

Pompey’s Pillar: this is the largest Roman triumphal column outside the imperial capitals of Rome and Constantinople. In addition, it is the only known free-standing column in Roman Egypt and one of the largest ancient monoliths in the world.

Lunch in Alexandria. Then the return to Cairo (about 3 hours) and overnight at your hotel.

Day 4 – The Egyptian Museum, Khan el-Khalili and Al-Muizz Street

The Egyptian Museum (Tahrir Square): opened in 1902, the museum in Tahrir Square is one of the most important places in Cairo. It holds more than 150,000 works of art from every period of Egyptian history. You also see the world-famous golden treasures of Tutankhamun and the mummies of well-known pharaohs. Your Egyptologist guides you around the highlights of the collection.

Lunch at a local restaurant is included.

Khan el-Khalili and Al-Muizz Street: in the afternoon, you immerse yourself in the Islamic heart of Cairo. The Khan el-Khalili souk, a true oriental maze of scents, spices and handicrafts since the 14th century, sits next to Al-Muizz Street. This street is considered the best-preserved medieval Islamic street in the world and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Day 5 – The Fayoum: Wadi al-Hitan and the Wadi el-Rayan Waterfalls

In the morning, you leave for the Fayoum, a drive of about 1 hour.

Wadi al-Hitan, the Valley of the Whales, a UNESCO World Heritage Site: located about 240 kilometres south-west of Cairo, it is one of the most remarkable places in the world. Here you find the remains of whales from 40 million years ago, from the ancient Tethys Ocean that once covered Egypt. As a result, you learn about whale evolution: from land-dwelling ancestors hunting in shallow seas to today’s marine mammals.

The Wadi el-Rayan waterfalls: Wadi el-Rayan is a depression 42 metres below sea level with an area of 673 km². Since 1966, underground channels have linked it to Lake Qarun, so today it forms an impressive body of water with Egypt’s only natural waterfalls.

Lunch at a local restaurant in the Fayoum is included. Then the return to Cairo and overnight at your hotel.

Day 6 – Memphis and the National Museum of Egyptian Civilisation (NMEC)

Memphis, the former capital of ancient Egypt, was founded around 3100 BC by King Menes. The city quickly became the centre of administration, trade and cultural exchange in unified Egypt. During the visit, you see the monumental statue of Ramesses II, the enigmatic alabaster sphinx and the stela of King Apries.

Next, lunch is planned at a local restaurant.

The National Museum of Egyptian Civilisation (NMEC) is the first institution of its kind in Egypt and the Arab world. It presents the whole of Egyptian civilisation from prehistory to the present day. The biggest attraction, however, is the royal mummies exhibition, staged with 21st-century technology. In this way, science and history come together in a moving encounter with the past.

Day 7 – The Citadel, Coptic Cairo and the Flight to Luxor · Embarkation

Saladin Citadel and the Alabaster Mosque: this vast citadel on the Mokattam Hills was built in the 12th century to defend the city against the Crusaders. It combines military, residential and religious functions, creating a unique architectural ensemble. In addition, the Mosque of Muhammad Ali in its courtyard offers spectacular views over the whole of Cairo, as far as the Giza Pyramids.

Coptic Cairo and the Hanging Church: this is the oldest Christian quarter of Cairo. The Al-Muallaqa church, one of the most important Coptic churches in Egypt, was built on the ruins of the Roman fortress of Babylon. It also impresses with intricate wooden decoration and medieval icons.

Then a transfer to Cairo Airport and a domestic flight to Luxor. At Luxor Airport, an English-speaking tour representative welcomes you with a sign bearing your name. Welcome drinks (water and cola) are waiting in the vehicle. You then board your Nile cruise ship, where lunch on board is included.

Day 8 – The Karnak Complex and Luxor Temple

Covering 247 hectares, the Karnak temple complex is the largest religious structure in human history. It was built over more than 2,000 years, as successive pharaohs expanded it in honour of the sun god Amun-Ra. Above all, the Great Hypostyle Hall, with 134 columns up to 24 metres high, is considered one of the most impressive architectural achievements of antiquity.

Luxor Temple, built on the East Bank of the Nile during the reigns of Amenhotep III and Ramesses II (c. 1550–1077 BC), was a place of coronations and religious festivals. Moreover, the recently uncovered Avenue of Sphinxes links it once again to the Karnak complex.

Lunch is served on board, where you also spend the night.

Day 9 – Edfu: the Temple of Horus, and Kom Ombo: the Double Temple

The Temple of Edfu – the Temple of Horus: this is one of the best-preserved temples in the whole of Egypt. Construction began in 237 BC under Ptolemy III Euergetes and ended in 57 BC under Ptolemy XII. Its impressive pylons, detailed reliefs and the sanctuary of the falcon god tell the age-old myth of the battle between Horus and Seth.

The Temple of Kom Ombo – the double temple: this unique temple, 40 km north of Aswan, is divided symmetrically between the crocodile god Sobek and the falcon god Haroeris. It dates from the Ptolemaic and Roman period (332 BC – AD 395) and also houses the fascinating Crocodile Museum with mummified specimens.

Lunch and dinner on board. Overnight on the ship.

Day 10 – Aswan: the High Dam · Philae Temple · the Unfinished Obelisk

The Aswan High Dam, a great feat of engineering, was built between 1960 and 1968 and opened in 1971 under President Nasser. It was originally intended to tame the Nile, generate power and improve irrigation. Today it holds back the waters of the vast Lake Nasser and supplies the country with electricity.

Philae Temple, dedicated to the goddess Isis, now stands on Agilkia Island. Thanks to a UNESCO campaign between 1972 and 1980, it was saved from the waters of Lake Nasser, as every stone of this Ptolemaic masterpiece was moved. Construction of the temple began in 690 BC.

The Unfinished Obelisk, almost 42 metres long and with an estimated weight of 1,168 tonnes, lies directly in the granite bedrock of Aswan. It reveals the fascinating stoneworking techniques of the ancient Egyptians, because a crack in the rock stopped its extraction.

Overnight on board the ship.

Day 11 – Abu Simbel: the Rock Temples of Ramesses II and Nefertari

Departure at about 3:00 am in a private air-conditioned vehicle to Abu Simbel. The drive takes about 3 hours each way, as it is 280 km south of Aswan, near the border with Sudan.

The Great Temple, dedicated to Ramesses II, was carved directly into the rock in the 13th century BC. Four colossal statues 20 metres high guard the entrance. What is more, twice a year, on 21 March and 21 September, the sun’s rays reach deep into the sanctuary and light up the statues of the gods.

The Small Temple is dedicated to the goddess Hathor and Queen Nefertari. The queen’s colossal statues stand at the same height as those of Ramesses II, a sign of the pharaoh’s affection for his wife. Between 1964 and 1968, both temples were moved stone by stone to higher ground in a UNESCO rescue campaign.

Then the return to Aswan, with lunch on board. You spend the night on the ship.

Day 12 – A Free Day on Board

Enjoy a day of relaxation as you cruise the Nile. You see a unique landscape of fertile banks framed by desert and river. Watch the passing feluccas and the peaceful life of Nile villages, which has changed little since the time of the pharaohs. It is a day of rest, calm and contemplation at the heart of this timeless river.

Day 13 – Luxor West Bank: the Valley of the Kings · the Temple of Hatshepsut · the Colossi of Memnon

The Valley of the Kings (Wadi el-Muluk): located on the West Bank of Thebes, near Luxor, this is the eternal resting place of the mightiest New Kingdom pharaohs (16th–11th century BC). It contains more than 63 burial chambers with beautiful frescoes, including the tomb of Tutankhamun, discovered in 1922. The ticket covers three tombs, while Tutankhamun’s tomb and others are available for a supplement.

The Temple of Hatshepsut (Deir el-Bahari): it rises on three terraces above the desert plain and blends into the steep limestone cliffs of the Theban hills. Hatshepsut, Egypt’s only female pharaoh, had herself portrayed as a man to legitimise her rule. Her reliefs also tell the story of the legendary expedition to the Land of Punt.

The Colossi of Memnon: two seated statues, about 18 metres high, depict Pharaoh Amenhotep III. They once guarded a huge mortuary temple on the West Bank of Luxor. As a result, they make a beautiful end to an unforgettable day in ancient Thebes.

Lunch and dinner on board. Overnight on the ship.
