First, a certified English-speaking Egyptologist guide welcomes you at Cairo International Airport with a sign bearing your name. You are then driven to your hotel in a private air-conditioned vehicle, with a welcome drink waiting on board. After a smooth check-in, your guide talks you through the whole travel plan and the pick-up times. A quiet evening and overnight stay follow.
The Giza Pyramids: The three huge pyramids of Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure are the only surviving one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. For example, the Pyramid of Khufu alone has a volume of 2.3 million cubic metres and originally stood 146 metres high.
The Sphinx and the Valley Temple: The legendary guardian with the body of a lion and the head of Pharaoh Khafre is one of the most famous symbols in human history. Directly opposite stands the Valley Temple, one of the oldest surviving stone buildings in the world.
Lunch at a local restaurant is included.
Saqqara – the Step Pyramid of Djoser: Built around 2650 BC, it is the oldest surviving stone pyramid in the world. What is more, the funerary complex covers almost 16 hectares and is surrounded by a limestone wall 10 metres high. It is therefore a fascinating open-air museum of ancient Egyptian architecture.
The Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square: Opened in 1902, the museum holds more than 150,000 exhibits from every period of Egyptian history. Here you also see the famous golden treasures of Tutankhamun and the mummies of great pharaohs.
Lunch is included.
Khan el-Khalili and Al-Muizz Street: Cairo’s great bazaar has bustled with life since the 14th century, making it a true maze of alleys, spices, metalwork and oriental atmosphere. Right next to it is Al-Muizz Street, the best-preserved medieval Islamic street in the world. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Saladin Citadel and the Alabaster Mosque: Salah ad-Din built the citadel on the Mokattam Hills in the 12th century to defend against the Crusaders. In its courtyard rises the magnificent Mosque of Muhammad Ali, also known as the Alabaster Mosque. From here, there is a breathtaking view over the whole of Cairo.
Coptic Cairo and the Hanging Church: This is the oldest Christian quarter of Cairo. The Hanging Church (Al-Muallaqa) is one of the most important Coptic churches in Egypt. It was built on the remains of the Roman fortress of Babylon.
Flight from Cairo to Luxor. At the airport, an English-speaking tour representative welcomes you. You then board your Nile cruise ship, and lunch on board is included.
The Karnak complex: This is the largest religious structure in human history: 247 hectares expanded by successive pharaohs over more than 2,000 years. Above all, the famous Great Hypostyle Hall, with 134 columns up to 24 metres high, is among the most impressive monuments of antiquity.
Luxor Temple: Built during the reigns of Amenhotep III and Ramesses II on the East Bank of the Nile, it hosted royal coronations and the great religious festivals of ancient Egypt. Today, the newly uncovered Avenue of Sphinxes links it once again to Karnak.
Lunch on board. Overnight on the ship.
The Temple of Edfu (Temple of Horus): This is one of the best-preserved temples in Egypt, dedicated to the falcon god Horus. Construction began in 237 BC under Ptolemy III and was completed in 57 BC. Its reliefs also tell the myth of the eternal battle between Horus and Seth.
The Temple of Kom Ombo: This unique double temple lies 40 km north of Aswan. It is dedicated both to the crocodile god Sobek and to the sky god Horus. It dates from the Ptolemaic and Roman period (332 BC – AD 395) and also houses the fascinating Crocodile Museum.
Dinner and overnight on board.
The Aswan High Dam: This is the most impressive feat of engineering in Egypt. It was built between 1960 and 1968 and then opened in 1971 under President Nasser. The dam holds back the vast Lake Nasser and generates a great deal of electricity for the whole country.
Philae Temple: The temple dedicated to the goddess Isis now stands on Agilkia Island. Between 1972 and 1980, UNESCO moved it stone by stone to protect it from the waters of Lake Nasser. Thanks to this, we can still admire this masterpiece of Ptolemaic architecture today.
The Unfinished Obelisk: It is almost 42 metres long and weighs about 1,168 tonnes. Because it was carved directly into the Aswan granite, it reveals the working techniques of ancient Egyptian stonemasons.
An early-morning departure at about 3:00, followed by a drive of about 3 hours in a private air-conditioned vehicle to Abu Simbel. The rock temples lie in the far south of Egypt, near the border with Sudan, and are among the most impressive monuments in human history.
The Great Temple (Ramesses II): It was carved directly into the mountain in the 13th century BC, and four colossal seated statues, each 20 metres high, guard the entrance. What is more, twice a year (22 February and 22 October) the sun’s rays reach all the way into the sanctuary.
The Small Temple (Nefertari): Dedicated to the goddess Hathor and Queen Nefertari, it shows the queen at the same size as Ramesses II, which was an exceptional honour. Between 1964 and 1968, both temples were moved stone by stone thanks to UNESCO.
Lunch on board. Return to Aswan. Overnight on the ship.
Enjoy a day of relaxation on your cruise ship. Admire the unique Nile landscapes, the fertile banks and the desert stretching to the horizon, a view that has changed little since the time of the pharaohs.
The Valley of the Kings (Wadi el-Muluk): On the West Bank of Thebes lies the eternal resting place of the mightiest New Kingdom pharaohs (16th–11th century BC). The valley has more than 63 tombs decorated with beautiful paintings. Among them is the tomb of Tutankhamun, discovered in 1922 together with its legendary golden treasures.
The Temple of Hatshepsut (Deir el-Bahari): It rises on three terraces above the desert plain and blends into the limestone cliffs of the Theban hills. Hatshepsut, Egypt’s only female pharaoh, had herself portrayed as a man to legitimise her power.
The Colossi of Memnon: Two seated statues, about 18 metres high, depict Pharaoh Amenhotep III. They once guarded a huge mortuary temple. They make an ideal photo stop on the West Bank of Luxor.
Lunch on board. Dinner and overnight on the ship.
Disembarkation after breakfast. Next, a transfer to Luxor Airport, followed by a domestic flight from Luxor to Cairo and your connecting flight home. This is how your unforgettable 11 day Cairo and Nile cruise tour comes to an end.
