Explore more Luxor tours and Hurghada excursions.
Day 1 – Luxor: Karnak, the Valley of the Kings, the Temple of Hatshepsut and a Nile Boat Trip
Early in the morning, we pick you up from your hotel in Hurghada or Marsa Alam in a private air-conditioned vehicle. We then set off for Luxor, with a short stop along the way. In Luxor, an English-speaking Egyptologist guide welcomes you.
First, we visit Karnak Temple, the largest temple complex in the world, covering more than 247 hectares. Many pharaohs expanded this unique site over more than 2,000 years. Its heart is the hypostyle hall with 134 mighty columns up to 24 metres high.
Lunch at a local restaurant is also included.
An hour-long boat trip on the Nile in Luxor then awaits you. From the water, you enjoy a wonderful view of the temples and the green Nile Valley.
Next, we discover the Valley of the Kings, the eternal resting place of the New Kingdom pharaohs from the 16th–11th century BC. This fascinating place holds more than 63 tombs richly decorated with paintings.
We also visit the Temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el-Bahari. Built on three levels, it blends spectacularly into the limestone cliffs of the Theban hills.
Nearby stand the Colossi of Memnon. Sculptors carved these two monumental statues of Amenhotep III, about 18 metres high, from quartzite blocks that workers transported 700 km from the Cairo area.
Afterwards, we head for Aswan, where you spend the night at a hotel with breakfast.
Day 2 – Abu Simbel: the Rock Temples of Ramesses II and Nefertari
Departure from your hotel in Aswan early in the morning, at about 5:00. You then travel to Abu Simbel in a private air-conditioned vehicle, a drive of about 3 hours each way.
Builders carved the Great Temple, dedicated to Ramesses II, directly into the rock in the 13th century BC. Four colossal seated statues adorn its façade. Inside the sanctuary are images of the deities Amun-Ra, Ra-Horakhty and Ptah, and of the deified Ramesses II.
Twice a year, on 22 February and 22 October, a remarkable solar phenomenon occurs. The sun’s rays then reach deep into the main temple and light up the statues at the far end. It is impressive proof of ancient astronomical knowledge.
The Small Temple, on the other hand, is dedicated to the goddess Hathor and Queen Nefertari. Here, the colossal statues of the queen are just as grand as those of her husband.
The story of how both temples were moved is also fascinating. In a UNESCO rescue campaign, engineers dismantled and rebuilt them stone by stone, one of the largest monument rescue operations in history.
Lunch in Aswan is also included.
After this day, you return to Aswan, where you spend the night at a hotel. Breakfast the next day is included.
Day 3 – Aswan: Philae Temple, the High Dam and the Unfinished Obelisk
Breakfast at the hotel is included. Then your Egyptologist picks you up.
Philae Temple: a tribute to the goddess Isis and the last temple in the classical Egyptian style. Construction began in 690 BC. After the dam was built, the temple was rescued and moved to Agilkia Island.
The Aswan High Dam: an impressive feat of engineering, built between 1960 and 1968 and opened in 1971 under President Gamal Abdel Nasser. It created the vast Lake Nasser and generates a great deal of hydroelectric power for the whole of Egypt.
The Unfinished Obelisk: about 42 metres long and weighing almost 1,168 tonnes, it would have been the largest obelisk in history. It also offers a fascinating insight into the stoneworking techniques of the ancient Egyptians.
Lunch at a local restaurant in Aswan is included.
Finally, the return to Hurghada or Marsa Alam. This is how the 3-day Luxor, Aswan and Abu Simbel tour comes to an end.
This private 3-day tour from Luxor to Aswan includes Karnak Temple, the Valley of the Kings, the Temple of Hatshepsut, a Nile boat trip, Abu Simbel, Philae Temple and the dam. An English-speaking Egyptologist guide accompanies you, and 2 overnight stays and 3 lunches are included. Departures are from Hurghada and Marsa Alam.
