Itinerary of the Dendera and Abydos Tour from Luxor

First, at around 7:00 am, we pick you up from your hotel or cruise ship in Luxor. Then you set off in a private, air-conditioned car to Abydos, about 135 km north of Luxor. The journey takes about 2 hours, so bring water and something to read.

Abydos and the Temple of Seti I

At Abydos, you visit the monumental Temple of Seti I. This site held enormous religious significance for the ancient Egyptians and was especially linked to the cult of Osiris, god of the underworld and rebirth.

Construction began under Seti I in the 13th century BC, and his son Ramesses II continued the work. The temple is famous for its exceptionally well-preserved reliefs, which still impress with their detail and colour.

One of its most important monuments is the famous Abydos King List, showing Seti I and the young Ramesses II paying homage to 76 earlier rulers of Egypt. It is an extremely valuable source of knowledge about pharaonic history.

The Osireion – a Mysterious Structure at Abydos

Behind the main temple lies the Osireion, an extraordinary underground structure linked to the cult of Osiris. Part of it is now under groundwater, which adds to its mysterious atmosphere.

After the visit, there is a break for lunch at a local restaurant, near Abydos or on arrival in Dendera.

Dendera and the Temple of Hathor

Next, you travel to Dendera, home to the impressive Temple of Hathor. The complex, whose main parts date mostly from the Ptolemaic and Roman periods, is one of the best-preserved temples in Egypt.

The ceilings and reliefs are especially striking, still showing intense shades of blue, red and yellow.

Your Egyptologist guides you through the monumental hypostyle hall, the underground crypts and the rooftop chapels. You also learn the story of the famous Dendera Zodiac, one of the best-known astronomical depictions from ancient Egypt.

Return to Luxor

At around 5:00 pm, you begin the journey back to Luxor. Finally, you are dropped off directly at your hotel or cruise ship.

Why Choose the Dendera and Abydos Tour from Luxor?

Above all, it is a chance to see temples many visitors skip. Abydos and Dendera are also usually much quieter than Karnak or the Valley of the Kings, so you can admire the reliefs in peace and take photos at leisure. The tour is private, so we adapt the pace to your needs. Your English-speaking Egyptologist guide explains the meaning of symbols, gods and inscriptions. Entrance tickets, lunch and mineral water are included. If you are interested in ancient Egyptian history, this route will delight you. That is why we especially recommend it to travellers who have already seen Luxor’s main sights. Sharara Tours organises the whole day, so you do not need to worry about transport or tickets.
